What is the maximum vertical weight limit and what does this mean?

The maximum vertical weight is the vertical Legal weight you may allow to the rest of the towbar. This requirement is in line with the manufacturers’ legal standards and has undergone necessary testing and approval. You will normally see a SABS stamp somewhere on the unit. Exceeding these limits will void the manufacturers’ warranty and possible insurance claims as well. Be careful to follow the towing requirements as this will have a significant impact in terms of usability and safety. Make sure you use Approved Towbar Fitment Centres.

What is my vehicles maximum towing capacity?

Your vehicles ability to tow maximum load will depend on the vehicle itself. Always refer to your vehicle’s handbook, it will give you clear and precise instructions as to what your maximum loads are. A vehicle can only tow a certain load before comprising the safety of the vehicle and other road users.  Please be sure to follow all towing regulations for your safety

Do I need a license to Tow?

Yes, you do need a license to tow if the GVM of the trailer is over 750 kilograms. If you’re involved in an accident, your insurance claim may be denied and you could receive a fine.

What vehicles do you fit towbars for?

We will fit a towbar to any make of Bakkie. We have various options ranging from a Double tube full step towbar to a Detachable towbar. Our Fitment centre does not do not fitment of towbars to Normal Cars, SUV. We only fit towbars to Bakkies and light commercial vehicles.

What is the time frame it takes to install a towbar?

A product can take anywhere between 24-48 hours to arrive once ordered at our approved towbar fitment centre. We do not keep stock on hand. We order as we need. A towbar installation can range anywhere from an hour to 3 hours depending on the type of vehicle we are fitting. Once again, only fit your tow bar at an APPROVED TOWBAR FITMENT CENTRE

Who is aware of the new Towbar Legislation?

According to the new legislation, it is mandatory for all towbars to be approved by SABS. Your insurance will become null and void and you will have no recourse if you do not meet those requirements. Some companies produce towbars without testing on-site. All SABS-approved towbars should go through over a million stress tests for a supplier to bear the approval stamp. Customers should be wary of companies claiming to be SABS-approved. It is important to ask the right questions and thoroughly research before making any purchases.

Important pointers

• Insurance claims resulting from accidents while towing may face serious challenges if any of the following apply:
• It is imperative to note that the towbar or drop-plate installed on your tow car by an aftermarket accessory supplier does not have SABS approval.
• You use an approved drop-plate and approved towbar from an aftermarket accessory supplier, but they have not been approved together as a unit.
• You exceed the maximum drawing capacity of the towbar.
• You exceed the maximum towing capacity of the tow-car as advertised by the manufacturer.
• The GVM of your overrun-braked caravan or trailer is more than the tare of your tow car.
• The GVM of your unbraked caravan or trailer is more than half the tare of your tow car.

Understanding your vehicle and the item you will be towing is imperative before doing a tow fitment on any particular vehicle. You need to consider the future value to ascertain what your future needs could be. A towbar fitment if done incorrectly could be costly in many aspects. A Lady walked into our Approved Towbar Fitment Centre and asked if we had any Tow Bars For Sale…

She proceeded to show us her vehicle. The Towbar had ripped off the back of her chasis as the load she was doing was too heavy for the vehicle towing capability. The towbar was still fine. Her chasis had unfortunately torn off at the back of the vehicle. This is just an example of how not following manufactures instructions can have disastrous effects on your vehicle. They are there for a reason. Her trailer she was towing veered off the road and crashed. She will have to pay for the repairs to her vehicle since her insurance denied the claim.
