Why does your Bakkie need a Tonneau Cover?

A tonneau cover in current automotive terminology is a cover that  is fitted the back of a bakkie to protect the load and to make your bakkie more aerodynamic, thereby increasing fuel consumption. Without a tonneau cover, your bakkie acts like a bucket catching air that passes over it as you drive. This drag makes your engine work just a little bit harder.

Although the covers are pretty much the same from manufacturer to manufacturer, there are some tarpaulins that are made differently, such as ones that fold, retract, or tilt open.  We only specialise in 2 types, clip on covers and rope tie-on covers. Not only is the Tonneau Cover / Bakkie Cover used to keep out the dust, rain and the like, it also reduces fuel consumption as mentioned above. Is a Tonneau Cover 100% waterproof?

The short answer to this question is, when properly installed, a tonneau cover will keep the vast majority of water from entering the bakkie’s load bed. To describe a Tonneau Cover as 100% watertight or waterproof would be inaccurate.

What you should know about Tonneau Covers / Bakkie Covers Tarpaulin Covers

All bakkie covers are sold as a full kit which includes the aluminium rail systems, pegs and tension rods to name a few.  Aluminium tracks are installed into the bakkie’s load bin area cover is then fitted onto the Aluminum track.

Tonneau covers are not universal, in other words, one cover does not fit all double cabs, for example. In the same token, not all manufacturers’ bakkie covers are compatible with one another. The aluminium rail system for a clip-on bakkie cover differ between manufacturer to manufacturer. The same can be said for a vehicle that has a rollbar/sportsbar, since the dimensions and thickness of the bar itself, differs.

In the case where it is a non-standard rollbar/sportsbar, the bar will have to measured before the cover is made. Should you wish to purchase a bakkie cover and fit it yourself, we will be more than willing to courier the cover in kit form to you. Additional charges apply.  Kits come complete with fitting instructions.

Rope Tie-On Elasticated Tonneau Covers

All elasticated rope tonneau covers/bakkie covers are made in the the same way as the Clip-on Covers but clips onto the sides of the vehicle. The fact they are are UV protected makes them last longer. These tarpaulin bakkie covers are weatherproof and keeps out most of the water but fits differently to the clip on covers. Fitted with an elasticated rope (Bungee cord) it hooks onto  the clips mounted onto the sides bakkie. Some bakkies come standard with hooks already on the side of the vehicle, so there is no need to install the clips first . This enables the elasticated rope to hold the tauno cover in place.

Elasticated rope tauno covers/bakkie covers are available for just about any make and model of bakkie.

Are Tonneau Covers/Bakkie Covers lockable?

Tonneau covers are generally not lockable, but then then again there  are some manufacturers who do supply lockable covers. Whilst it is maybe what you are looking for, if safety is your main priority, then a tonneau cover may not meet your need.

    I have the following enquiry, your Tonneau Covers are supplied in a full kit. Can you advise me on the following, we have a 2015 Mazda BT50 bought in April 2021. The current cover is brand new done by the garage where we purchased it. The problem we have is that the cover is a Elasticated Rope Tie-on and we find that it scratches and damages the paint on the sides. So therefor will it be possible for you to convert our own cover into a Tonneau Cover seeing that it’s still brand new?
