Why Fit a Towbar?
A towbar instantly adds versatility to your vehicle, allowing you to tow a trailer, caravan, or even mount practical accessories like bike racks. As a result, you expand your vehicle’s capabilities for both work and leisure.
Moreover, a professionally fitted towbar enhances overall functionality without compromising safety. Instead, it ensures your vehicle remains stable, secure, and fully compliant on the road.
In addition, a quality towbar installation supports reliable performance under load, giving you confidence in every situation. Ultimately, you get a smarter, more capable vehicle ready for towing any task.
Benefits of a Fixed Head Towbar
A Fixed Head Towbar gives you a cost-effective solution that delivers strong reliability at a lower price than detachable systems.
In addition, it supports accessory use, so you can fit certain cycle carriers while still towing. As a result, you use your vehicle more flexibly in everyday situations.
What’s more, its heavy-duty design handles trailers, caravans, and other demanding loads through towball and pin systems. This ensures consistent, dependable performance under pressure.
Towing made easier
Beyond that, you can adjust your towing height with ease using drop plates, spacers, and height-adjustable couplings. Consequently, you set up a safer and more balanced towing position.
Finally, it allows you to fit bumper protector plates, which reduce rear-end wear and extend the durability of your setup over time.
Benefits of a Detachable/Demountable Towbar
To begin with, a detachable towbar offers a discreet, slim-line design that allows you to remove the neck when it is not in use, helping preserve your vehicle’s original aesthetics.
In addition, a detachabe towbar keeps your reversing sensors fully functional, since the towbar neck can be detached to prevent any interference during parking or manoeuvring.
What’s more, it delivers everyday convenience with a quick and simple attachment or removal process, giving you flexibility whenever you need it.
At the same time, the lockable mechanism adds an extra layer of security, helping protect your towbar from unauthorised removal.
Ultimately, you get a practical, secure, and a clean towing solution that adapts easily to your lifestyle.
Step Plate Towbars – Built for Strength, Designed for Safety
Our Step Plate Towbars combine rugged functionality with everyday convenience, giving you a practical upgrade for both work and leisure use.
In addition, the secure and sturdy platform mounts firmly onto the towbar, providing a reliable stepping surface you can trust under load. Furthermore, the anti-slip tread design improves grip and stability, ensuring safe footing even in wet or muddy conditions.
As a result, you gain effortless access when loading or unloading heavy items from your vehicle’s bin, saving both time and effort. At the same time, the design enhances overall safety by reducing the risk of slips, falls, and strain-related injuries.
Ultimately, this makes Step Plate Towbars the perfect solution for workdays and weekends alike—where practicality meets peace of mind.
Important information on Towing
Maximum vertical weight limit of a Towbar
Guard against overloading. Always take note of the maximum vertical legal weight that is allowed to rest on the towbar. This information is usually displayed on the towbar itself, together with the SABS approval indicating that the product is tested and approved.
What does this mean for you?
If the Towbar’s carrying capacity exceeds the stipulated weight, it will void the manufacturer’s warranty. Insurance claims may not be settled as a result. It is important to note that non-adherence to the towing capacity manufacturing requirement will have a significant impact regarding your safety.

TOWBARS
How do I know what my vehicle’s maximum towing capacity is?
Dont be fooled! Your vehicle’s ability to tow a certain load limit will depend on the vehicle itself. Therefore, it is imperative that you make reference to your vehicle’s handbook, which provides clear and concise instructions regarding your maximum pulling/towing capacity. Don’t compromise your safety and endanger other road users through sheer ignorance!

Note the importance to follow all towing regulations for your own safety.
Do you need a licence to tow?
Yes, you do need a licence to tow, especially if the gross vehicle mass GVM of the trailer is over 750 kilograms.

Fitment of Towbars

Towbar Legislation
Are you aware that legislation requires all towbars to carry SABS approval. If your towbar does not meet this requirement, your insurance can become invalid and you lose all recourse in the event of an incident. You must familiarise yourself with these rules before you fit any towbar.
All SABS-approved towbars go through multiple stress tests before a supplier earns the official approval stamp. This process proves strength, safety, and compliance. If a product does not carry this approval, you should walk away.
Some manufacturers claim SABS approval, but you need to verify it for yourself. Ask the right questions and check the certification before you make a decision. Do your homework properly before you fit a towbar—your safety and protection depend on it.

Terminology and definitions relating to Towbars
Tare
The Tare of your Vehicle, Trailer or Caravan is the actual weight of the vehicle without any petrol / fuel, luggage, and passengers. The Tare weight will include any standard fittings.
Payload
It is the maximum mass a vehicle, trailer or caravan including passengers fuel or luggage.
Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM)
GVM is the sum of the tare and payload which equals to the maximum permissible, fully loaded mass of the vehicle.
Gross Combination Mass (GCM)
As the term implies, it is the sum of the GVM of the towcar and the vehicle manufacturer’s maximum towing capacity for that vehicle, that is, the mass of the fully laden tow vehicle plus the maximum towing capacity as stated by the manufacturer.
Towbar static load
This means the maximum permissible downward force on a towbar specified as it’s static load.
Towbar maximum drawing capacity
Usually, Towbar manufacturer’ specify the maximum mass that a trailer or caravan may be towed with using a particular towbar.
Nose weight
Nose weight is the mass of a caravan or trailer measured at the tow hitch. By law, in South Africa, it has to be between 25 kg and 100 kg.
Manufacturer’s maximum towing capacity
Vehicle manufacturers specify the maximum towing capacity, in kilograms, that their vehicles can handle. (eg., GCM – GVM = towing capacity).
Braked trailer
Certain caravans and trailers come standard with what is known as an ‘overrun’ brake system and, as a result, fall into the category of ‘braked’ trailers or caravans. In line with South African law, all caravans and trailers with a GVM above 750 kg must include a braking system.
In simple terms, overrun brakes are activated when the tow vehicle’s brakes are applied. A shock absorber behind the caravan’s coupling compresses with the forward force of the caravan, which activates the overrun brakes mechanically by means of cables.
This causes the caravan or trailer to brake simultaneously with or fractionally, after the towcar.
Service (additional) brakes
Service brakes are not commonly used. Instead, when people refer to “service brakes,” they usually mean hydraulic, vacuum, or electrical braking systems fitted to caravans or trailers.
In practice, you should fit this type of system when a caravan or trailer has a GVM that exceeds the tare weight of the tow vehicle. This ensures safer and more controlled braking performance.
In addition, all three systems engage when you press the brake pedal in the tow vehicle. Furthermore, some systems allow independent control from inside the vehicle through a switch or lever, giving you added control and responsiveness while driving.

Important pointers to know
Insurance claims resulting from accidents while towing may face serious challenges owing to any one of the following when:
- A Towbar fitted by an aftermarket accessory supplier is not SABS-approved.
- The Towbar is not fitted with an approved drop-plate and not purchased from an accredited aftermarket accessory supplier.
- The maximum drawing capacity of the towbar is exceeded.
- The maximum towing capacity of the towcar as advertised by the manufacturer is exceeded.
- The GVM of your overrun-braked caravan or trailer is more than the tare of your towcar.
- The GVM of your unbraked caravan or trailer is more than half the tare of your towcar.
